Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5167/1A-001: The Full Steel Aquanaut

The Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5167/1A-001 is the steel, time-and-date Aquanaut on a full stainless steel bracelet. It keeps the familiar Aquanaut formula, with the rounded octagonal case and the embossed dial, and runs the case into steel links in place of the composite strap. Patek lists the case at 40.8 mm across and 8.1 mm thick, and the dial stays monochromatic from its charcoal gray surface to its white gold numerals.

Put an Aquanaut on a full steel bracelet and it invites an obvious question: why not a Nautilus? The 5167/1A answers with the Aquanaut's own character. The bracelet adds weight and presence, and the case and dial keep everything that makes the Aquanaut work.

1. The 40.8 mm Steel Case

Patek Philippe gives the steel case a diameter of 40.8 mm, measured from 10 to 4 o'clock, and a height of 8.1 mm. The rounded octagonal bezel carries a satin-brushed top surface framed by polished edges, and the same contrast of brushed and polished steel runs down the case flanks. The screw-down crown carries the Calatrava cross.

The full steel bracelet adds noticeable weight, and the 5167/1A carries more presence than an Aquanaut on the composite strap.

Approximate readings: 46.8 mm lug to lug, 9.1 mm thick, and 151.8 grams on the scale

2. The Charcoal Gray Embossed Dial

The dial is charcoal gray and carries the embossed Aquanaut grid, which gives the surface its texture. The tone deepens toward the edge of the dial. Applied white gold numerals and matching luminous hands sit on top, with a date window at 3 o'clock.

Everything on the dial stays in the same monochromatic range. That keeps the watch clean, simple and easy to wear.

3. Caliber 26-330 S C

Inside is Patek Philippe's self-winding caliber 26-330 S C. It drives central seconds and the date at 3 o'clock, with a power reserve of 35 to 45 hours. The sapphire caseback shows the movement, the bridges carrying the Patek Philippe Seal, and the gold central rotor engraved with the Calatrava cross.

4. The Full Steel Bracelet

The bracelet is what sets this watch apart in the Aquanaut line. The Aquanaut is best known on its composite strap, as on the Aquanaut 5167A-001. The 5167/1A runs the same case into a full stainless steel bracelet instead, with satin-brushed links and polished edges that match the finishing on the case.

It closes on a folding clasp. The Calatrava cross sits on the clasp cover, and the Patek Philippe Genève name is engraved along the blade inside.

5. How the Bracelet Changes the Aquanaut

On steel, the Aquanaut takes on a slightly more traditional sports watch feel. The bracelet gives it more versatility than the composite strap, and it makes the watch a little easier to wear every day, in all kinds of situations. The watch underneath stays familiar, simple and monochromatic.

That makes the 5167/1A the unusual Aquanaut pick, and one that does not rock the boat. A single change at the bracelet gives the watch a completely different presence while keeping everything that makes the Aquanaut work.
