Vacheron Constantin Overseas Tourbillon Skeleton 6000V: Pink Gold, Openworked

The Vacheron Constantin Overseas Tourbillon Skeleton, reference 6000V/210R, puts an openworked self-winding tourbillon inside a full 18-carat 5N pink gold Overseas. Vacheron lists the case at 42.5 mm across and 10.39 mm thick, with caliber 2160 SQ measuring 5.65 mm through the middle of it. The dial is sapphire, with its minute track finished in black velvet, so the anthracite caliber shows through nearly all of it, and the Maltese cross tourbillon carriage turns openly at six o'clock. Turn the watch over and a 22-carat gold peripheral rotor travels around the outside of the caliber.

The gold ends up being one of the quieter parts of the watch. The eye goes to the tourbillon first.

1. A 42.5 mm Case at 10.39 mm Thick

Vacheron officially lists the case at 42.5 millimeters in diameter and 10.39 millimeters thick. The second figure is the one that gets interesting once you know what is inside it: a fully skeletonized self-winding tourbillon caliber with an 80-hour power reserve. Caliber 2160 SQ is only 5.65 mm thick, and that is what allows a complicated, full gold Overseas to stay this low.

2. 18K 5N Pink Gold, Satin and Polished

The case and bracelet are built from 18-carat 5N pink gold, combining satin brushing with polished edges. The polished bevels catch the light sharply while the brushed surfaces keep the gold measured, and against the dark anthracite caliber the contrast does most of the work. On most watches a full pink gold integrated bracelet would dominate the design. Here it frames the movement.

3. The Sapphire Dial and the Maltese Cross Tourbillon

From a distance the dial reads as a maze. Get closer and the order starts revealing itself. The front is a sapphire dial with a black velvet-finished minute track, which leaves caliber 2160 SQ underneath almost completely exposed. The movement receives a dark anthracite gray NAC treatment, and the polished bevels flash brightly as the watch moves while the rest of the skeletonized architecture sits dark and deeper beneath the sapphire.

At six o'clock sits Vacheron Constantin's Maltese cross shaped tourbillon carriage, held much more openly in the dial than the rest of the caliber. The cage completes one rotation every 60 seconds and also carries the running seconds indication. Because the polished cage is both exposed and constantly moving, it reacts to light completely differently from the darker architecture around it.

Legibility gets its own attention here. The 18-carat gold hands and hour markers are set above the darker movement and treated with blue Super-LumiNova, and the black outer minute track gives the eye a clean reference point.

4. Caliber 2160 SQ and the 22K Peripheral Rotor

Caliber 2160 SQ contains 186 components and 30 jewels, measures 5.65 mm thick, and delivers approximately 80 hours of power reserve. It carries the Hallmark of Geneva, the Poinçon de Genève, which sets standards for the construction, finishing and performance of the movement. On a caliber this open, almost all of that work is there to inspect.

Vacheron winds it with a 22-carat gold peripheral rotor that travels around the outside of the caliber. That solves two problems at once: it keeps the movement almost completely unobstructed from the back, and it helps Vacheron hold the thinness, since the winding mass never stacks above the movement. Shako calls it one of the coolest rotors he has seen, and the reason he gives for it is mechanical.

5. Bracelet, Rubber and Leather

The watch comes with the full 18-carat 5N pink gold bracelet, a textured gray rubber strap and a black leather strap, all on Vacheron's interchangeable strap system. On the gold bracelet it is the complete expression: weight, warmth and serious presence. The gray rubber is the combination Shako picks as his favorite visually, because it takes up the anthracite tones of the movement, cools the pink gold down, and lets the skeletonized caliber become even more dominant. The black leather brings out the traditional high horology side of Vacheron, where the same tourbillon reads quieter, more formal, almost more classic.

The straps highlight different parts of the same watch. Underneath the horology it is still an Overseas: 50 meters of water resistance, antimagnetic protection, and a strap system that changes the character of the piece in a few seconds. It is high horology built inside a watch that still understands it is supposed to be worn.
