Rolex Oyster Perpetual 36 Multicoloured Jubilee Dial: Ref. 126000-0016

The Oyster Perpetual is usually Rolex at its most restrained. Reference 126000-0016 turns the volume all the way up. The case is the same 36 mm Oystersteel Oyster that Rolex has built for decades, and the dial is where everything changes: a multicoloured Jubilee motif that repeats the Rolex name across the dial in a graphic block pattern. This unboxing covers what it looks like coming out of the box, what it measures on our calipers and our scale, how it sits on a 7 inch wrist, and what is running inside.

The Multicoloured Jubilee Motif Dial

The Jubilee motif has history at Rolex as a subtle repeating pattern worked into the dial surface. Here it comes back in full color. The Rolex name repeats across the dial in blocks of red, blue, green, yellow and black, tilted at different angles, so the pattern reads as graphic design before it reads as a watch dial.

Rolex states the dial uses no fewer than 10 colors, applied one after another with exact alignment. That last part is the whole trick. A pattern this busy only works if every color lands exactly where it should, and the register holds across the full dial.

The applied baton markers and the hands stay plain polished steel, which gives your eye somewhere to rest. They are filled with Chromalight for long-lasting blue luminescence, so the watch still reads in the dark. There is also no date window cutting into the pattern, and the motif runs uninterrupted all the way around.

It is still a Rolex, and it is still controlled even while it is having fun. The smooth Oystersteel bezel keeps the top of the watch quiet and lets the dial do all of the talking.

The 36 mm Oystersteel Case, Measured

Rolex lists the case at 36 mm across and does not publish official lug-to-lug or thickness figures. So we put it on the calipers. Ours came back at 43.1 mm lug to lug and 11.6 mm thick. Treat those as reference numbers taken in our office.

Reference measurements taken in our office: 43.1 mm lug to lug, 11.6 mm thick.

On the scale the complete watch came in at 123.4 g, which the same scale reads as 0.2720 lb. That is a little over a quarter of a pound on the bracelet, light enough to forget you have it on.

The same watch weighed both ways: 123.4 g and 0.2720 lb on the Oyster bracelet.

Water resistance is 100 m, sealed by the screw-down Twinlock crown and a screw-down case back. That covers a pool or a rinse in the sink without any thought.

At 36 mm this wears as a true unisex size. On a 7 inch wrist the lugs stop well short of the edge, and the case stays put all day.

Oyster Bracelet and Oysterclasp

The three-piece link Oyster bracelet is the one that grounds the whole watch. It is the broadest and most solid of Rolex's bracelets, and against a dial this loud it is exactly the right choice.

It closes with a folding Oysterclasp carrying the Easylink extension, worth about 5 mm of extra length with no tools involved. Flip it open and the bracelet loosens by roughly half a link. It is one of those details you stop thinking about because it simply works.

Inside: Caliber 3230

Inside is the Rolex caliber 3230, a self-winding movement with approximately 70 hours of power reserve. It runs a paramagnetic blue Parachrom hairspring on Paraflex shock absorbers, which is how it holds its rate through knocks and magnetic fields. Functions are centre hours, minutes and seconds, plus stop-seconds for setting the time precisely.

The finished watch is certified as a Superlative Chronometer, Rolex's own standard of -2/+2 seconds per day, tested after the movement is cased. Seventy hours of reserve means you can take it off Friday evening and it is still running Monday morning.

What we like about this one is that the loud part is only the dial. Everything around it is standard Rolex construction done properly, so the watch still behaves like an Oyster Perpetual. You get the case, the bracelet, the movement and the chronometer rating, with a dial that makes people ask about it.
