Contemporary by design, yet respectful of watchmaking tradition, this watch in 18K 5N pink gold houses an ultra-thin, entirely skeletonized perpetual calendar. Accurate until the year 2100, a moon phase with a star-studded sky and two gold moons add the finishing touches to the calendar. The fine watchmaking finishes and gray tone of the NAC-coated caliber can be seen both from the front and through the sapphire caseback. The watch can be personalized thanks to its system of three easily interchangeable straps – leather, rubber, and 18K 5N pink gold.

Unboxing the Vacheron Constantin Overseas Perpetual Calendar Skeleton Ultra-Thin (Ref. 4300V/120R)

The Vacheron Constantin Overseas Perpetual Calendar Skeleton is one of those pieces that stops people the second we take it out of the box. It packs a perpetual calendar into an ultra-thin 18K rose gold sports watch, and the whole dial is opened up so you can watch the mechanism run. Reference 4300V/120R shows the day, date, month and moon phase through a skeletonized dial that still reads clearly, all in a case just over 8 mm thick. Here is a closer look at the one we filmed.

A Perpetual Calendar Just Over 8 mm Thick

The case measures 41.5 mm across, with a lug-to-lug just under 48 mm, and it stands 8.1 mm thick. On our calipers it read right around 8 mm. For a perpetual calendar, that is genuinely thin. Most watches carrying this much mechanism sit noticeably taller, so getting the full calendar into a case this flat is the headline here.

On our calipers the case measured right around 8 mm (measurement approximate, for reference).

The case, the bezel and the bracelet are all solid 18K 5N rose gold. On our scale the watch read 167.4 grams on the full bracelet, so you feel the metal when you pick it up. The side profile shows the notched bezel and the fluted crown stamped with the Vacheron Maltese cross.

The Skeletonized Dial

The dial is fully openworked. Vacheron skeletonized the movement so you can see the going train and the calendar works underneath, and every visible bridge and wheel is finished by hand. Even with all of that opened up, it stays legible. The day of the week arcs across the lower left, the date reads off a scale on the right, the month and leap-year indication sit toward the upper left, and the moon phase disc is at 6 o'clock with the Vacheron Constantin logo printed on it. The hour markers and hands are filled with lume, so you can still read the time in the dark.

The moon phase display is set to stay accurate to the year 2100 before it needs a one-day correction.

The Movement and the Caseback

Inside is the self-winding Caliber 1120 QPSQ/1, an ultra-thin perpetual calendar movement with roughly a 40-hour power reserve. It carries the Hallmark of Geneva, the finishing standard Vacheron works to on this reference. Turn the watch over and a sapphire caseback shows the movement from the back as well. The caseback is engraved Vacheron Constantin, Antimagnetic, 50M and Swiss Made, with the 4300V reference and the AU750 gold mark.

The Overseas Bracelet

The Overseas bracelet is one of the reasons this line has the following it does. The outer links are shaped after the Vacheron Maltese cross, with cleaner lines running down the center, and in rose gold they catch the light well. It runs on Vacheron's quick-change system, so you can swap the bracelet for a strap without tools, and the clasp has a comfort extension built in that adjusts the fit by a few millimeters on each side.

This reference ships with the rose gold bracelet plus leather and rubber straps, so the quick-change system earns its keep.

On the Wrist

On a 7-inch wrist the 41.5 mm case wears flat and balanced. The thin profile is what makes it work. A solid gold sports watch this size could sit heavy. The low case height keeps it flat and planted. It reads as a proper integrated sports watch, just with a perpetual calendar and moon phase behind the crystal.

The one we filmed is a 2022 example in like-new condition with its original box and papers, and it is available now as a pre-owned piece.

Frequently Asked Questions

What movement is in the Overseas Perpetual Calendar Skeleton?

It runs the self-winding Caliber 1120 QPSQ/1, an ultra-thin perpetual calendar with roughly a 40-hour power reserve and the Hallmark of Geneva. The perpetual calendar tracks the day, date, month and leap year, so it does not need adjusting for the different month lengths through to the year 2100.

How thick is the watch?

The case stands 8.1 mm thick, which is very thin for a perpetual calendar. On our own calipers it measured right around 8 mm. That flat profile is a big part of why the watch wears so comfortably despite being solid 18K rose gold on a gold bracelet.

Does it have an open caseback?

Yes. The 4300V/120R has a sapphire display caseback, so you can see the finished movement from the back as well as through the openworked dial. It is rated to 50 meters of water resistance.

What does it come with?

The example we filmed is a 2022 piece in like-new condition with its original box and papers. Vacheron delivers this reference with the rose gold bracelet plus leather and rubber straps, and the quick-change system lets you move between them without tools.
