Rolex Oyster Perpetual 34 Candy Pink Dial: Ref. 124200-0009
The Oyster Perpetual sits at the base of the Rolex catalog, and the candy pink dial is the one we get the most reaction from when we show the 34. Reference 124200-0009 is Oystersteel throughout, with a smooth bezel, a three-link Oyster bracelet, and no date. There is no chronograph and no second time zone. The dial does all of the talking. Rolex builds that color out of six layers of lacquer over a brass base, then varnishes and polishes the surface, which is why it reads bright and deep instead of flat. This unboxing covers what the watch looks like coming out of the box, what it measures on our calipers and our scale, how it sits on a 6.2 inch wrist, and what is running inside.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual 34mm Oystersteel Candy Pink Dial Smooth Bezel Oyster Bracelet (Ref# 124200-0009) - $11,800

The Candy Pink Lacquer Dial
Rolex lays the color down in six layers of lacquer over a brass dial base. The dial is then varnished and polished, and that final step is where the gloss and the depth come from. Hold it against a single-coat painted dial and the difference is obvious.
Everything around the color stays plain. Baton hour markers, straight hands, the crown at twelve, and no date window cutting into the symmetry. That restraint is why the pink works. Put the same color under a fluted bezel with a date and a Cyclops and the watch would be fighting itself.
The hands and markers are filled with Chromalight, so the watch still reads in the dark. On a piece this dressy the lume is easy to overlook, and Rolex fits it anyway.
The 34 mm Case, Measured
Officially the case is 34 mm across. Our own numbers: 40.1 mm lug to lug, 10.9 mm thick, and 104.0 g complete on the scale. That last figure is under a quarter of a pound, and it tells you more about how the watch wears than the diameter does.
Reference measurements: 40.1 mm lug to lug, 10.9 mm thick, 104.0 g on the scale.
Case, smooth bezel, and bracelet are all Oystersteel. The smooth bezel keeps the top of the watch quiet and leaves the dial as the only thing asking for attention. Water resistance is 100 m behind the Twinlock screw-down crown, which covers a pool or a rinse in the sink without any thought.
The wrist shot is our own Miriam, whose wrist measures roughly 6.2 inches. The 40.1 mm lug-to-lug span fits inside that with room left over, and the case stays put rather than sliding around. 34 mm has long read as a unisex size, though with this dial and this presentation we would steer this configuration toward the ladies.
Oyster Bracelet and Easylink Clasp
The three-link Oyster bracelet gives the watch more substance than a small dress watch usually carries. It closes with a folding Oysterclasp, and inside that clasp is Rolex's Easylink extension, worth about 5 mm of additional length with no tools involved. Flip it open and the bracelet loosens by roughly half a link. It is a small feature that earns its keep in summer, when a wrist swells over the course of a day.
Inside: Caliber 2232
Inside is the Rolex caliber 2232, automatic, with approximately 55 hours of power reserve. It runs a Syloxi silicon hairspring, which holds its rate through temperature swings, knocks, and magnetic fields better than a traditional metal hairspring does. The finished watch is certified as a Superlative Chronometer, Rolex's own standard of -2/+2 seconds per day, tested after the movement is cased.
The 2232 tells time and nothing else. There is no date to correct and no pusher to think about. Set it, put it on, and leave it alone.
Our Read on the 124200-0009
The appeal here is the color and the proportions, not the material or the mechanics. Everything else on this watch is standard Rolex construction done properly, and that is exactly what lets the dial land the way it does. It is an easy watch for us to recommend, whether it is a first Rolex or a lighter, brighter change of pace next to a steel sport model.
