Unboxing the Patek Nautilus 5990/1R-001 Travel Time Chronograph

The Patek Philippe Nautilus Travel Time Chronograph 5990/1R-001 is the full rose gold version of one of Patek's most useful sports watches. You get a flyback chronograph, a second time zone with day and night indicators for both, and a date tied to local time, all in an 18K rose gold case and bracelet under a blue sunburst dial. We put this one on the caliper and the scale before it went back in the box, and those numbers explain most of what you feel when you pick it up.

Case Dimensions and Weight

Patek lists the 5990/1R-001 at 40.5 mm in diameter and 12.53 mm thick. Our own measurements came in at roughly 46 mm lug to lug and 12.8 mm thick. Those are approximate, for reference only. On the scale it read 248.7 grams, a little over half a pound of 18K rose gold. The weight is the first thing you notice when you pick it up, and the case thickness is the second.

The Blue Sunburst Dial

The blue sunburst dial carries the Nautilus family's familiar horizontal embossing, with applied rose gold hour markers and baton hands filled with luminous material. The blue moves with the light, reading brighter under direct light and settling into a much darker navy as it turns away. That cooler tone is what balances the warmth of all that rose gold. The layout stays organized: the date sits at 12, the chronograph minute counter at 6, and the day and night indicators for local and home time at 9 and 3.

How the Travel Time Works

The travel time system is the feature we find most useful on this watch. The solid luminous hour hand shows local time and the skeletonized rose gold hand shows home time. Line the two up and the skeletonized hand sits hidden beneath the solid one, so the dial reads like a conventional three-hand watch until you need the second zone.

Two pushers sit in the Nautilus ear on the left side of the case. The upper one advances the local hour hand by an hour, the lower one moves it back by an hour. The hand jumps on its own, so you can set a new time zone while the movement keeps running and the minutes, seconds and home time stay exactly where they were. It is fast, intuitive and genuinely useful for travel.

The Flyback Chronograph

The two pushers on the right side of the case run the chronograph in the classic arrangement: the upper one starts and stops it, the lower one resets it. Because it is a flyback system, you can press the reset pusher while the chronograph is still running. The central hand returns to zero and begins timing again on a single press. Elapsed minutes register on the 60-minute counter at 6 o'clock. Patek keeps the chronograph layout restrained, so the dial still reads as a Nautilus first.

Caliber CH 28-520 C FUS

Inside is Patek's self-winding caliber CH 28-520 C FUS, built from 370 components and delivering a power reserve of roughly 45 to 55 hours. The sapphire caseback shows the 21K gold rotor and the finishing behind it: polished bevels, Geneva striping, circular graining, polished screws and carefully finished bridges throughout. The caliber carries the Patek Philippe Seal, the brand's own standard covering construction, accuracy, reliability and finishing.

Case Finishing and Bracelet

Patek runs contrasting polished and satin brushed surfaces across the case, bezel, pushers and bracelet. The top of the bezel is brushed while the sloped edges are polished, and that contrast continues down the bracelet, letting the rose gold catch light in controlled flashes.

The bracelet does real work here. Its wide integrated design spreads those 248.7 grams evenly, and the thin links let it wrap comfortably. It also includes a tool-free adjustment system that expands slightly from either side of the clasp whenever you want a bit more breathing room.

How It Wears

On the 7 inch wrist in our video the 5990/1R-001 sits securely. The Nautilus case keeps the diameter compact at 40.5 mm, and the relatively short 46 mm lug to lug measurement helps it stay planted. You feel every one of those 248.7 grams, and that heft is part of what makes a solid gold sports watch feel like one. A screw-down crown and 30 metres of water resistance cover normal daily wear.

FAQ

What movement is in the Patek Nautilus 5990/1R-001?

The self-winding CH 28-520 C FUS. It runs 370 components and holds roughly 45 to 55 hours of power reserve.

How big is the 5990/1R-001?

The official figures are 40.5 mm across and 12.53 mm thick. On the caliper it read about 46 mm from lug to lug, with thickness closer to 12.8 mm. Treat those as approximate.

How much does the rose gold 5990 weigh?

Ours read 248.7 grams on the scale with the bracelet fitted, a little over half a pound.

How does the Travel Time function work?

Two pushers in the case ear on the left move the local hour hand forward or back one hour at a time. The hand jumps independently, so the minutes, seconds and home time keep running undisturbed.

Final Thoughts

The 5990/1R-001 pulls off a difficult balancing act. It is large, heavy, complicated and made entirely from rose gold, and on paper that combination could easily tip into excess. The Nautilus proportions, the blue dial and the controlled finishing keep it tasteful. The travel time system is the standout: a genuinely practical function that leaves the visual identity of the Nautilus intact. For someone who appreciates rose gold and high complication, this one speaks volumes, and it still carries the refinement that makes a Patek feel like a Patek.
