F.P. Journe Élégante 48 in Titanium (Ref. ELHT): Unboxing a 68-Gram Electromechanical Watch

The F.P. Journe Élégante 48 looks like a proper mechanical watch: a tonneau case, a white dial, and blued hands. Then you pick it up and feel how little there is to it. When we show it to people, the weight is the first thing they mention. This one is the titanium version, reference ELHT, and it came to us on a khaki green rubber strap. We unboxed it and shot the whole thing, so you can see the case, the dial, the movement through the back, and how it actually sits on the wrist. Here is what stood out to us.
A Titanium Case You Barely Feel
The Élégante 48 uses a Flat Tortue case: a soft tonneau shape with exposed screws at the corners of the bezel. It measures 40mm across, 48mm from lug to lug, and just under 8mm thick. In titanium with a Titalyt surface treatment, it reads almost like polished steel in person, cool and neutral, without the flash of a precious metal.

The number we point to is the weight. On our scale it came in at 68 grams, strap and all. From the side you can see how flat it sits, which is a big part of why it disappears under a cuff.

The Dial: Time-Only and Quietly Technical
This is a time-only watch with a small seconds sub-dial. The center is a luminescent white, and the outer track carries the F.P. Journe Arabic numerals along with the "Invenit et Fecit" signature and a set of blued steel hands. There is a lot of care in a layout that, at a glance, just tells the time.

Look at 4:30 and you will find a small aperture. It is not decoration. It is a window onto the motion detector, the inertia weight that senses whether the watch is being worn. That one detail explains how the whole thing works before you even flip it over.

Caliber 1210: The Electromechanical Movement
Inside is F.P. Journe's caliber 1210, and it is the reason the Élégante exists. It is an electromechanical movement: a quartz crystal oscillating at 32,768 Hz keeps the time, and a patented motor drives the mechanical hands. You get the accuracy of quartz with a movement Journe still finishes and signs.
The clever part is the standby mode. Wear it and it runs like a normal watch. Set it down and leave it still for about 35 minutes, and the motion detector sends it to sleep: the hands stop while the movement keeps counting time internally. Pick it back up and the hands jump straight to the correct time, taking the shortest path to get there. Worn daily, F.P. Journe rates the battery at 8 to 10 years. Left in standby, it can stretch to 18 years.

On the Wrist and Strap Options
At 40mm wide and 68 grams, it wears light and flat. There is no top-heavy feel, no need to keep adjusting it through the day. F.P. Journe fits the Élégante on a wide range of colored rubber straps, and swapping them changes the character of the watch completely. Ours is on khaki green, which works well against the titanium. Water resistance is 30 meters, so it handles daily life without being a swimming or shower watch.
