The Rolex Perpetual Padellone is a 39mm annual calendar moonphase watch that Rolex launched on September 15, 2026, as a new model in its Perpetual family alongside the 1908. It comes in three references: Everose gold on a brown alligator strap (m53505-0002), Everose gold on a Settimo bracelet (m53505-0003), and 950 platinum with an ice blue dial (m53506-0002). Launch coverage puts US retail at $59,000 to $72,800 (Hodinkee, September 2026).
The name comes from the Ref. 8171, a rare triple calendar moonphase Rolex made from 1949 to about 1953. Collectors nicknamed it "Padellone," Italian for large frying pan, for its wide, flat case. The new watch keeps the 8171's dial layout and adds an annual calendar, a 5Hz movement and a sapphire caseback. It launched in Milan, outside the Watches and Wonders calendar.

All three share the same 39mm case, dial layout and movement. The Everose gold models carry a grained white dial, and the platinum model carries an ice blue dial.

How the Padellone's Annual Calendar Works
The Padellone shows the full calendar. The day and the month appear in English in two windows under 12 o'clock. A blue hand with a crescent moon at its tip points to the date printed around the edge of the dial. The moonphase sits at 6 o'clock.
The calendar is annual. Rolex's patented Haplos system tells 30-day months from 31-day months, so the date needs one correction a year, when February turns to March.
The calendar is also instantaneous. At midnight the day, date and month all change together in a fraction of a second. Rolex has filed a patent application for that mechanism as well. Four correctors in the case sides set the day, month, moonphase and date with an included stylus.
The moonphase disc is blue enamel scattered with stars. Both moons are meteorite, with the new moon treated in dark blue PVD, and each carries a face inspired by the 8171. The disc completes one rotation per lunar cycle.

Calibre 7190 and the Dynapulse Escapement
The Padellone runs on the calibre 7190, a self-winding movement built on the calibre 7135 that Rolex introduced in the Land-Dweller in 2025. It beats at 5Hz (36,000 vibrations per hour) and holds a power reserve of about 66 hours.
Its escapement is the Dynapulse, which gives the balance a direct impulse through silicon wheels and works with a Syloxi silicon hairspring. The movement is the subject of 30 patent applications, two of them exclusive to this watch.
The Padellone is certified as a Superlative Chronometer, Rolex's in-house standard of −2/+2 seconds per day tested after casing. The movement shows through the sapphire caseback.

The Vintage Rolex Ref. 8171 Padellone
Rolex made the Ref. 8171 from 1949 to about 1953, in steel, yellow gold and pink gold. It was a 38mm triple calendar moonphase with day and month windows under 12 o'clock, a date track around the dial and a moonphase at 6. The new Padellone follows the same layout in a case 1mm wider.
The 8171 is a rare vintage Rolex. Estimates put production at roughly 1,200 to 1,400 pieces across all metals, with about 200 well documented today (Hairspring, 2024). Revolution puts about 600 of them in steel. The 8171 used a snap caseback and was not water resistant.
Recent results vary widely. Seven recent auction results, from November 2025 to July 2026, run from $89,600 to $635,000 (EveryWatch auction data, September 2026):

Every result in that table sits above the new Padellone's highest reported US retail of $72,800. The 8171 was followed by the waterproof Ref. 6062, and a 6062 sold for $6.2 million at Monaco Legend in 2025 (Hodinkee). With the new watch, Rolex has made the collector nickname the official model name.
Padellone vs Sky-Dweller vs Cellini Moonphase
The Padellone is Rolex's second current annual calendar. The Sky-Dweller has carried one since 2012, paired with a second time zone. The Cellini Moonphase ref. 50535, introduced in 2017, was Rolex's first moonphase since the 6062 left the catalog in 1953. The Cellini line was discontinued when the Perpetual 1908 arrived in 2023.

Where the Perpetual 1908 Fits
The Padellone shares its 39mm size, fluted bezel and sapphire caseback with the Perpetual 1908, which Rolex introduced in 2023. The 1908 shows hours, minutes and small seconds. The Padellone adds the annual calendar and moonphase to the same case.
