1. Everose Gold and the Oyster Case

The case and bracelet are crafted from Rolex's proprietary 18-karat Everose gold. This is a restrained take on rose gold, and we think that restraint is a major part of the appeal. The tone sits slightly desaturated, so it stays warm, rich, and luxurious without reading as pink or copper heavy. That softer tone also works beautifully alongside mother of pearl, because the gold frames the dial and lets the dial do the talking.

The Oyster case is completed by the signature fluted bezel, a screw-down crown, a sapphire crystal, and 100 metres of water resistance. Rolex publishes the case at 40 mm across, with a 47.5 mm lug-to-lug span and roughly 12.2 mm of thickness.

2. The Mother of Pearl Dial

From across a room this can read as a plain white dial. Once light reaches the surface, the mother of pearl begins to sway in both tone and hue, moving through white, silver, cream, and subtle iridescent color depending on the angle you catch it at. It behaves like a moving painterly canvas.

We put our own calipers on this watch. They read 47 mm lug to lug and 12.70 mm thick, both sitting close to Rolex's published figures.

Weight is where a full gold Day-Date makes itself known. On our scale it came in at 203.5 g as currently sized, which works out to 0.4485 lb, comfortably under half a pound. Once it is on, that weight gives the watch real presence, and the President bracelet spreads it well enough that the case stays settled instead of tipping forward.

4. Inside the Case: Caliber 3255

Inside the watch is Rolex's caliber 3255, an automatic movement developed and manufactured in-house. It provides approximately 70 hours of power reserve, which is enough to leave the watch off from Friday evening and still find it running on Monday morning.

The 3255 drives the instantaneous day and date changes that give the Day-Date its name, and it adds quick calendar adjustment along with a stop-seconds function for precise time setting. Beneath the Everose gold, the diamonds, and the mother of pearl, this remains a practical Rolex built to be worn on a regular basis.

5. The President Bracelet and Concealed Clasp

The President bracelet was created specifically for the Day-Date and is constructed from three-piece semicircular links. Those rounded links allow it to wrap closely, which matters a great deal on a watch weighing 203.5 g, because a close wrap is what keeps the mass distributed and the case sitting flat.

It closes with the concealed Crownclasp. From the outside there is a continuous run of links all the way around, and opening it means lifting the Rolex crown itself. Rolex also fits ceramic inserts inside the bracelet links to reduce wear around the pins over time. It is a small hidden detail, and an important one on a full gold bracelet designed to be worn for many years.
