Ayrton Senna's Watches: The TAG Heuers He Raced In and the Rolex He Gave Away

Ayrton Senna raced in TAG Heuer. TAG Heuer dates the partnership to 1988, and from 1989 through his final season in 1994 his race-day watches were TAG Heuer references, headlined by the two-tone S/el chronograph on its S-link bracelet, and the one Rolex in the documented Senna record is an 18k yellow gold Cosmograph Daytona reference 16528 that he gave to his karting mentor, which sold at Phillips in Geneva in May 2019 for CHF 162,500.

Senna won three world championships, in 1988, 1990 and 1991, and took 41 Grand Prix wins and 65 pole positions before he was killed at the San Marino Grand Prix at Imola on 1 May 1994. His watch record is unusually well documented for a driver of that era, partly because TAG Heuer kept its archives and partly because collectors have spent years matching race photography to reference numbers. Before TAG Heuer: Casio and Seiko, 1984 to 1988

Senna's first five seasons in single-seaters were spent in digital quartz. OnTheDash, the Heuer archive site run by Jeff Stein, published a reference-by-reference reconstruction of his watches by collector Michael Young, built from race photography and team records. It places Casio LCD digitals on him through Formula Ford and Formula 3, and a Casio TS-1000 during his 1984 debut season with Toleman.

The Lotus years are the interesting ones. From 1985 to 1987 he wore a Seiko Speed Master with a Giugiaro Design case, references A828-4010 or A828-4019, in black with gold lettering. Anyone who has seen a John Player Special Lotus will understand why that watch and that car go together. Senna was wearing it for his first Formula 1 victory at Estoril on 21 April 1985, a wet Portuguese Grand Prix he led from pole, and again for his 1987 Monaco win.

The same guide identifies a Casio DBT-70W through most of 1988, his first year at McLaren, and a Seiko A781 Racing Master late in that season, including the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka where he clinched his first world championship. These identifications come from photographic matching by a specialist collector, so treat the early years as well-argued attribution and the TAG Heuer years below as documented partnership.

The TAG Heuer Years: S/el, Formula 1 and the 6000

TAG Heuer dates the start of its relationship with Senna to 1988, the year he joined McLaren, and the brand's own magazine walks through the references he wore after that. The first was a Series 2000 automatic chronograph, reference 165.806, a 37mm steel and gold-plated case on an ETA 2892 base, worn at the 1989 Brazilian Grand Prix.

From the middle of the 1989 season the S/el chronograph took over. The name is short for Sports Elegance, and the design, credited to Eddie Schöpfer, is built around the interlocking S-shaped bracelet links that still identify the model on sight. Senna's were quartz multifunction chronographs in steel and gold plate: reference S25.706C with the cream dial and reference S25.206 with the anthracite dial. He wore the anthracite version at Suzuka in 1990 when he took his second title. He also had the S/el fitted with a brown leather strap, which Bonhams later described as custom ordered by Senna for comfort.

For his third championship, at Suzuka in 1991, he was wearing a TAG Heuer Formula 1 chronograph, reference 472.513, a 37mm case with red accents. From late 1992 onward his race watch was the TAG Heuer 6000, and this is one point where the sources disagree. TAG Heuer's magazine lists the two-tone reference WH5151 from 1992; OnTheDash argues the watch he actually raced in was the quartz WH1151, and treats the automatic WH5151 as a personal watch. Both agree the 6000 was the watch of his final two seasons.

The last chapter is a prototype. Two days before the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix, Senna met TAG Heuer's marketing manager Mike Vogt to finalize the first Senna-branded watch, a 6000 with a grey dial, checkered flag motifs and an S logo. Vogt said he wanted to buy one and was told staff could not; Senna took the prototype off and gave it to him. Vogt kept it unworn in a bank vault for thirty years and returned it to TAG Heuer in early 2024. It is now in the TAG Heuer Museum, and heritage director Nicholas Biebuyck called the donation "a real homecoming moment and one of the proudest additions" to the collection.

The Rolex Daytona Senna Gave Away

Senna raced under a TAG Heuer contract, so the Rolex in his story is one that left his hands. He gave an 18k yellow gold Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, reference 16528, to Angelo Parrilla, the karting figure and DAP founder who brought a teenage Senna to Italy and set his career in motion. The caseback is engraved "A Angelo da Ayrton 1978", which translates as "to Angelo from Ayrton". The 1978 marks the year the two of them started working together; the watch itself is a circa-1989 example, case number R944769, running the automatic caliber 4030 built on the Zenith El Primero.

Phillips sold it in Geneva on 11 May 2019 as lot 23 of The Geneva Watch Auction: NINE. The catalog described an early floating dial with a Mark 1 bezel and listed the supporting material: a letter from Parrilla confirming the gift, an autographed photograph of Senna, a signed helmet faceguard dated to 1988, plus the original box, pouch, service guarantee and literature. The estimate was CHF 100,000 to 200,000, offered with no reserve, and it sold for CHF 162,500.

That is the entire verified Rolex connection. We have not found a reputable source documenting Senna wearing a Rolex himself, and we would rather say so than fill the gap. What Senna's Watches Have Sold For

Two Senna-associated watches have public auction results. Both were personal gifts, and both were cataloged on the strength of their paperwork.

The Bonhams lot is the S/el on the brown leather strap. Senna handed it to Ron Pellatt, his number one mechanic on the McLaren test team, at the end of the 1993 season as a parting gift before the move to Williams. The catalog listed a letter of authenticity and photographs of Senna wearing the watch across the 1993 season, including the European Grand Prix at Donington. It has been offered twice, in 2004 and again in 2007.

The 1994 prototype in the TAG Heuer Museum is not for sale. OnTheDash notes a separate 6000 WH5151, reported as gifted to a business partner, that has carried a five-figure asking price at a Toronto dealer, which is an ask and not a recorded sale. That distinction matters when you are pricing provenance: an auction result is a number two people agreed on, and an asking price is one person's opinion.

The Senna Editions TAG Heuer Still Makes

The partnership outlived him. After 1994 the Senna Foundation extended the TAG Heuer agreement through 2004, a run that produced five commemorative models, and the first Senna-branded watch reached the public in 1995 as a 6000 limited to 1,000 pieces, carrying the S logo and checkered flag motif Senna had approved. TAG Heuer restarted the program in 2015 with new Carrera and Formula 1 Senna editions.

The most recent pair arrived around the 2025 São Paulo Grand Prix, and the family remains involved. Bianca Senna, chief executive of the Senna brand, described continuing the collaboration through the Designed to Win campaign as "especially meaningful this year".

Both dials use yellow, green and blue accents drawn from the Brazilian flag and Senna's helmet, and the titanium version's caseback is engraved with his eyes behind the visor. The steel version's S-link bracelet is a direct callback to the S/el he wore in period, which is the detail that makes it read as a Senna watch instead of a logo exercise. Prices above are Swiss francs as published at launch in November 2025 and will vary by market.
