The Most Wearable Tourbillon? Four Sports Tourbillons Compared (2026)

Last Updated: November 2, 2026

Whether a tourbillon works as an everyday watch comes down to four things: how thin the case is, how the movement is wound, how long it runs off the wrist, and what it wears on. Among the integrated-bracelet sports tourbillons from Vacheron Constantin and Audemars Piguet, the Vacheron Constantin Overseas Tourbillon is the most versatile, and Audemars Piguet's Royal Oak RD#3 is the thinnest.

The tourbillon began in pocket watches, patented by Abraham-Louis Breguet in 1801. In 1986 Audemars Piguet put one in the first series-produced self-winding tourbillon wristwatch. Today both houses build tourbillons into sports watches on integrated bracelets, rated to 50 meters. This guide compares four of them: the Overseas Tourbillon, and three Royal Oaks, called here the Flying Tourbillon 41, the RD#3 and the hand-wound Tourbillon Extra-Thin.

1. What Makes a Tourbillon Wearable

  • Thickness and diameter. A thinner, smaller case sits closer to the wrist and slides under a shirt cuff. Across these four, thickness runs from 8.1mm to 10.6mm, and diameter from 37mm to 42.5mm.
  • Metal. Every model comes in more than one metal. Titanium keeps the weight down, while gold and platinum add a lot of it. The model sections below give the weights we have.
  • Winding. An automatic movement keeps itself wound while you wear it. A hand-wound movement is wound by the crown.
  • Power reserve. This is how long the watch keeps running off the wrist. Here it ranges from 50 to 80 hours.
  • Straps. A bracelet that changes to rubber or leather lets one watch cover the office, the weekend and dinner. Royal Oak bracelets are fitted by removing links, covered in our Royal Oak bracelet sizing guide.

2. The Four Models at a Glance

Model Size Thickness Movement Power reserve Metals Straps
Vacheron Constantin Overseas Tourbillon 42.5mm 10.39mm Automatic, cal. 2160 80 h Steel, titanium, pink gold; Skeleton in pink gold and titanium Bracelet plus rubber and leather, tool-free change
Royal Oak Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon (Flying Tourbillon 41) 41mm 10.6mm (10.4mm on the first 26530) Automatic, cal. 2950 (2972 openworked) 65 h Steel, titanium, pink, yellow and white gold, ceramic; openworked in steel and sand gold Integrated bracelet
Royal Oak Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon Extra-Thin (RD#3) 37mm or 39mm 8.1mm Automatic, cal. 2968 50 h Steel; 37mm also in white gold Integrated bracelet
Royal Oak Tourbillon Extra-Thin 41mm 8.85mm (26510) Hand-wound, cal. 2924 70 h Steel, pink gold, platinum; openworked in yellow gold and platinum Integrated bracelet

All four are water resistant to 50 meters and show their movements through a sapphire caseback.

3. Tourbillon vs Flying Tourbillon

A tourbillon mounts the balance wheel and escapement inside a rotating cage. As the cage turns, the errors gravity causes in each position average out. A conventional tourbillon holds the cage with a bridge above it. A flying tourbillon is supported from below only, so the cage is fully open on the dial side.

Both self-winding Royal Oaks here use a flying tourbillon. The Overseas Tourbillon uses a bridged one, with an upper bridge holding its Maltese cross carriage.

4. Vacheron Constantin Overseas Tourbillon

Vacheron Constantin launched the Overseas Tourbillon in January 2019 as the first self-winding tourbillon in the Overseas collection. The case is 42.5mm across and 10.39mm thick, and the tourbillon sits at 6 o'clock on the Overseas dial, its cage shaped like the Vacheron Constantin Maltese cross.

Inside is the self-winding caliber 2160, only 5.65mm thick, with 188 components and an 80-hour power reserve. A 22k gold peripheral rotor winds it from the outer edge of the movement. That leaves the whole caliber visible through the sapphire caseback. The movement carries the Hallmark of Geneva.

In our video of the steel model, the presenter put it simply: "For a full automatic tourbillon sports watch, those are surprisingly wearable dimensions." He called it "almost the approachable tourbillon," because it is thin, automatic and changes straps. The bracelet comes off by hand in seconds, and the watch is supplied with a rubber strap and a leather strap as well. "Put it on the rubber and suddenly a six-figure tourbillon becomes surprisingly casual." Our guide to changing an Overseas bracelet or strap shows how it works, and the same system runs through the current Overseas line, from the Overseas Dual Time 7920V to the Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin 4300V.

Which Overseas Tourbillon

Every version shares the same case, movement and strap system. The choice is metal and dial:

  • Steel with the lacquered blue sunburst dial is the original 2019 version, and the one our video covers.
  • 18k pink gold, added in 2021, keeps the blue dial on a gold bracelet.
  • Titanium arrived in blue in 2024 and in a deep red in February 2026, both on a titanium bracelet. It is the lightest of the metals. The red dial is covered in Vacheron Constantin's 2026 releases.
  • The Overseas Tourbillon Skeleton, introduced in pink gold in 2022 and since made in titanium, opens the dial and runs the skeletonized caliber 2160 SQ in the same 10.39mm case. In our Skeleton review the presenter calls it "extremely serious high horology, built inside a watch that still understands it is supposed to be worn."

5. Royal Oak Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon 41mm

AP introduced the Royal Oak Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon in November 2020 as the 26530, the first flying tourbillon in the core Royal Oak collection. In January 2022 the 26730 replaced it, with wider bevels, tapered first bracelet links and new dials. The 26730 is 41mm across and 10.6mm thick, and the first-generation 26530 is listed at 10.4mm. Both run the self-winding caliber 2950, which pairs the flying tourbillon with a central rotor and runs for 65 hours.

We have weighed and measured one. The first-generation titanium 26534TI, a green-dial edition of 50 pieces, came in at 117.9 grams on our scale and measured a little past 50mm lug to lug on our calipers. The lugs run straight into the bracelet, so it sits flat on the wrist. In our video the presenter sums it up: "the presence, the structure without the heft. It wears bold, confident, and surprisingly comfortable."

The first-generation titanium 26534TI on the wrist and on our scale at 117.9 grams, and the openworked 26735ST in steel at 10.6mm.

Which Flying Tourbillon 41

  • Dial and metal. The 26730 comes in steel, titanium, pink, yellow and white gold, and "Bleu Nuit" ceramic, with dials from smoked blue Grande Tapisserie to sandblasted finishes. The steel 26730ST launched as a Royal Oak 50th anniversary edition with a "50 years" rotor. Our Royal Oak dial guide explains the patterns.
  • Openworked. The 26735, launched in January 2022 alongside the 26730, cuts the dial away around the tourbillon and runs caliber 2972 in a 41mm, 10.6mm case. It comes in steel and sand gold. Our 26735ST video and skeleton tourbillon review cover it up close.
  • First generation. The 26530 came in steel, titanium and pink gold. Our 26534TI video covers the green titanium limited edition.

The ST, TI and OO codes in each reference are explained in our guide to reading Audemars Piguet reference numbers.

6. Royal Oak Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon Extra-Thin (RD#3)

AP unveiled the Royal Oak Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon Extra-Thin in April 2022 as RD#3, its third Research & Development project after the Supersonnerie chiming watch and the RD#2 extra-thin perpetual calendar. At 8.1mm it is the thinnest tourbillon in this guide, and it still winds itself. Caliber 2968 is about 3.4mm thick and runs for 50 hours, about two days off the wrist.

It comes in two sizes. The 39mm 26670ST shares its 39mm by 8.1mm dimensions with the Royal Oak Jumbo Extra-Thin 16202, AP's time-only Jumbo, seen in openworked form in our 16204ST unboxing. The 37mm 26660 followed in steel later in 2022 at the same 8.1mm, and also comes in white gold. At 37mm it is the smallest watch here, with the octagonal bezel, the eight screws and the integrated bracelet of a full Royal Oak.

7. Royal Oak Tourbillon Extra-Thin (Hand-Wound)

AP introduced the hand-wound Royal Oak Tourbillon Extra-Thin in 2012 as the 26510, for the Royal Oak's 40th anniversary. Its caliber 2924 is only 4.46mm thick and runs for 70 hours. The 41mm case of the original 26510 is 8.85mm thick, with the tourbillon in an aperture at 6 o'clock.

Winding it by the crown is part of owning it, and a power reserve indicator on the caseback shows how much running time is left. It has come in steel, pink gold and platinum, with openworked versions in yellow gold and platinum. The precious metals make it heavy: a published hands-on weighed the pink gold 26510 at 240.1 grams and the platinum one at 309.5 grams, both on their bracelets. The steel 26522ST wears a purple "Tapisserie Evolutive" dial, a sunburst take on the Royal Oak's signature pattern.

8. Choosing Between Them

Each model wins on a different measure, so the right one depends on how you wear a watch:

  • If one watch has to do everything, the Overseas Tourbillon. It is the only one of the four that changes from its bracelet to rubber to leather without tools, and its 80-hour reserve keeps it running after a weekend in the drawer.
  • If thin matters most, the RD#3, at 8.1mm, in 37mm or 39mm.
  • If you want the full Royal Oak presence, the Flying Tourbillon 41, in the widest choice of metals and dials. In titanium, the one we weighed came in at 117.9 grams.
  • If you like winding a watch, the hand-wound Tourbillon Extra-Thin.

For the question in the title, the Overseas Tourbillon covers the most situations. Our video of it ends on the same idea: "It still feels like that super versatile watch you're supposed to wear on a regular basis." 9. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most wearable tourbillon?

Of the Vacheron Constantin and Audemars Piguet sports tourbillons compared here, the Overseas Tourbillon is the most versatile: automatic, 80 hours of power reserve, 10.39mm thick, with a bracelet that swaps to rubber or leather without tools. For the thinnest case, it is AP's RD#3 Royal Oak, at 8.1mm in a 37mm or 39mm size.

What is the thinnest Royal Oak tourbillon?

The Royal Oak Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon Extra-Thin, known as RD#3, at 8.1mm. It comes in a 39mm case and a 37mm case, both self-winding on the 3.4mm caliber 2968. The hand-wound Royal Oak Tourbillon Extra-Thin follows at 8.85mm in a 41mm case.

Is the Vacheron Constantin Overseas Tourbillon automatic?

Yes. It runs on the self-winding caliber 2160, wound by a 22k gold peripheral rotor that travels around the edge of the movement, so nothing hides the caliber through the caseback. The movement is only 5.65mm thick and runs for about 80 hours, which keeps the whole watch at 10.39mm.

What is the difference between a tourbillon and a flying tourbillon?

A conventional tourbillon cage is held by bridges above and below. A flying tourbillon has no top bridge and is held from underneath, which leaves the cage open to view on the dial side. AP's self-winding Royal Oak tourbillons are flying tourbillons, while the Overseas Tourbillon uses a bridged tourbillon.

When did Audemars Piguet release the Royal Oak flying tourbillon?

In November 2020, with the 26530. It brought a flying tourbillon into the core Royal Oak line for the first time. The 26730 took over in January 2022 with wider bevels, tapered bracelet links and new dials, and the openworked 26735 launched alongside it on the openworked caliber 2972.

Can you change the strap on the Overseas Tourbillon?

Yes. The Overseas uses Vacheron Constantin's tool-free interchangeable system, so the bracelet comes off by hand in seconds and a rubber or leather strap clicks in its place. The same system runs through the current Overseas collection, from the Dual Time to the Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin.
